Challenge Update and Week Three Book Change – Food Rules by Michael Pollan

by Kara on January 19, 2010

It turned out to be a busier weekend than I expected, and I got NO writing done. It also wasn’t a very good weekend in terms of food. I still had a calorie deficit, but in the case of Sunday, it was only a deficit of 11. I was feeling a little down, probably because my back is bothering me and because of work stress, and I always have trouble with eating in moderation when I am down. I did a little better on Monday and had a 500 calorie deficit, and I feel like I am back on track today.

Food RulesBecause I had such a crummy food weekend, I decided to change my week three book to Food Rules An Eater’s Manual by Michael Pollan. I haven’t read Omnivore’s Dilemma or In Defense of Food, but I have heard wonderful things about them. I chose Food Rules because it is a quick read with concrete advice, as opposed to being about the science and history of the western diet. Here’s a brief description from Amazon: “Michael Pollan, our nation’s most trusted resource for food-related issues, offers this indispensible guide for anyone concerned about health and food. Simple, sensible, and easy to use, Food Rules is a set of memorable rules for eating wisely, many drawn from a variety of ethnic or cultural traditions. Whether at the supermarket or an all-you-can-eat-buffet, this handy, pocket-size resource is the perfect guide for anyone who would like to become more mindful of the food we eat.”

I hope to get caught up with various posts here and on my travel blog by the end of this coming weekend. Despite setbacks on Sunday, I think I am on track for my weight loss and reading goals for Friday. I have a tendency to neglect updating my websites, even when the news is good. I am trying to be a little more disciplined about that, which is why I switched to the blog format. It is much easier to update since I don’t have to write code for every page.

I saw Pollan on The Daily Show and was impressed.
Don’t want to try averaging your calories by week?

Yeah, I have heard him interviewed on NPR and I really liked what he had to say. It sure would be a lot easier if I was raised to eat the way he suggests eating. It’s hard to overcome years of bad habits.

I’m not averaging my calories weekly because I’m using the Bodybugg, which is set up to compare calories burned to calories consumed each day. So I just input my food into the program, then upload the data from my armband each night to see how many calories I burned. Averaging calories by week would actually be more complicated in my case, as the program just calculates everything for me daily. It also keeps track of where you are compared to the recommended daily values of things like sodium, fiber, calcium, etc. I love it. Makes the whole process much easier for me.
