Comedian: Mike Birbiglia – I discovered Mike Birbiglia while listening to NPR on the way to meet a friend for coffee. He was telling a story about getting broadsided by a drunk driver and being forced to pay for the damage to the guy’s car. For such downer of a story, it was hilarious. By the time I got to the coffee house, I couldn’t wait to tell my friend about how funny this guy was. A few months later, we went to see him on his I’m in the Future Also tour. Easily my favorite comedy show ever. I had seen a couple other comedians I really liked earlier this year and was disappointed in their shows. The only disappointment with Birbiglia’s show is that I can’t go back every night. If you get a chance to check him out live, do! You can also download his album and a video on iTunes.

Song: Furnace Room Lullaby by Neko Case – This haunting song, which Case describes as a ghost story, demands to be played again and again. She has a fantastic, unique voice, showcased in the a capella opening. The video is really creepy too.

Holiday: Thanksgiving – For the first time ever, I am facing a Thanksgiving with absolutely no plans and I am thrilled. No gigantic meals and lots of time to work on my pet projects. I like my job, but I love a four-day weekend.

Seafood Pancake - YUM!

Food: Korean – How a girl from Iowa who wouldn’t even eat rice as a child decided that ddeok mandu (soup with rice cakes and dumplings), haemul pajeon (seafood pancakes) and bulgogi (barbecued beef) were the ultimate comfort foods, I don’t know. It might have something to do with marrying a Korean man. All I know is I hardly eat any of the foods I ate while growing up, but I am happily learning to cook Korean dishes. Best food ever.
